Bishop Dr. Dexter Cannon was born on February 3, 1974 to Virginia Wilson Cannon and the late Deacon Roscoe Cannon, Sr. A native of Greenwood, South Carolina, he is the youngest of five children, accepted Christ at the age of sixteen, and comes from a line of preachers called to the gospel ministry. An advocate for higher education, Dr. Cannon received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Health from South Carolina State University in 1997, a Master of Divinity Degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 2003, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in 2011.
Shortly after college, he was called to the gospel ministry at the age of 25 years old in April of 1999 and licensed to preach in February of 2000 by the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Greenwood, South Carolina. In August of 2000, he relocated to Richmond, Virginia to pursue his call to ministry by going to seminary. After serving as a Youth Minister of two Richmond area churches and the Director of Men’s Ministry of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, he was called to the pastorate. He served as Senior Pastor is First Union Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia where he served from 2005-2013. Dr. Cannon founded the Good Samaritan Empowerment Church in April of 2013 and led this church plant for seven years. Since May of 2016, he has served as the Senior Pastor of Grayland Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia and is also an Adjunct Professor and Faculty Mentor for the Doctoral students at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. There at United Theological Seminary, he established the doctoral cohort, Innovative Leadership: Building Leaders and Churches for Effective Change in 2018.
Dr. Cannon is no stranger to leadership and has been described as wise beyond his years. Over the years he has served on national, state and local levels providing leadership and received several awards for his service. He is the former Moderator of the Chickahominy Baptist Association, former Secretary of the Baptist Minister’s Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, former President of the Clergy Division of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, and former 5th Vice President for the Moderators Division of the South East Region of the National Baptist Convention, USA Incorporated.
In October of 2018, Dr. Cannon was consecrated to the office of Bishop under the apostolic leadership of the late Apostle Floyd E. Nelson, Sr., Apostle Willie E. Rookard, and Bishop Charles J.J. Jackson, III. He currently serves on the General Board of Bishops for the International Bible Way Church of Jesus Christ, Incorporated.
Dr. Cannon is a passionate preacher, teacher, change agent, author, and entrepreneur. He is the CEO and President of Dexter Cannon Ministries. In his years of life and ministry, Dr. Cannon has helped to lead change, restructure ministry, transition churches following long tenured leaders, plant churches, and serve as voice in the community at large among businesses and organizations. He is truly a bridgebuilder! Dr. Cannon is a member of the Upsilon Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Cannon believes his mission is to empower people with the message of the gospel and to develop leaders who make a difference in the world.
